These days (since 3.1 or 3.2 if I remember correctly), Plone is distributed
as a set of Python packages. With 4.0, Zope is also in the form of Python
packages. We use zc.buildout as a configuration control mechanism to
assemble all the parts.

By far the easiest way to get a start on that is to download and use the
Unified Installer (from plone.org/products/plone). Note that if you've
already got Python 2.6.x, you may use its --with-python option to avoid
installing another.

Alternatively, use the pip or easy_install to install the zopeskel package.
Then use the zopeskel utility to create a skeleton configuration.
