I compared a successful e-mail send from one of my scripts to a Plone send in the log, and AFAICS the differences are:
1) Plone says "SMTP=ESSL" rather than "RCPT=OK" and (thus?) does not get a "RECV=OK" in return. 2) Plone doesn't send a HELO domain or the addresses (maybe it doesn't get past the first part?)
