thank you Mikko. I found the problem... I had a hunch to try the default port of 8080 and that worked so I knew the site was fine..
for some strange reason, the http port parameter in zope.conf was reverted back to 8080 ... weird... so I changed that back to 80 and it's now working. However, when I left that and tried to install the portlet again, it failed again even though it's pointing to port 80. I'll try your debug switch suggestion.
