Hello,
I had thing, that to avoid [direct ALSA] X [Pulseaudio] access
conflicts, it is enough to disable the soundcard used for VoIP
(headset) in PulseAudio settings.
? How to: "disable the ALSA plugin in pulseaudio" ?
Head of my ~/.asoundrc is:
# Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1).
# (To disable these settings, comment out this line.)
#</home/hugo/.asoundrc.asoundconf>
so I thing ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf:
pcm.!default { type pulse }
ctl.!default { type pulse }
should be disabled - but it is NOT - in U10.10 is the "default"
still Pulseaudio (?!). Sorry -I don't see in deep.
Example: If I could configure Pulseaudio to use by me defined PCMs
and not to take "whole" sound card, then it would be possible to use
dmix/snoop and there would be no conflict ALSA/Pulseaudio. Maybe ?-)
Maybe could also help to let users to select (and define) PCMs
manually - like in Twinkle - there I can manually select every PCMs
defined in .asoundrc.
So I can take control about using plugins like dmix or plug, which
can be useful.
(Example: my sound card do not play 8 kHz mono sounds in good
quality - so I had defined PCM with "plug" to convert it to 44.1 kHz
stereo.)
----
But:

I don't thing, that described problem is caused by conflict
ALSA/Pulseaudio then these problems appear
1. even if no other applications are trying to play sounds (for long
time before)
2. even if I disable one/both soundcards in Pulseaudio (sound
settings apllet).
Thanks
