I have seen a couple of posts with regard to this aspect.
I can appreciate a development path that looks at the cross
compatibility aspect of evolution, but after trying to gain some
ground with Suse/Novell as a trainer and having used evolution in the
very recent past, I can assure you that it is a broken model.
It's no surprise to me that Novell are looking at being bought out at present.

I find that KDE povides a much more stable situation for the aspect of
personal management and even though this may have the effect of
'locking out' the substantial windows market potential, if evolution
does pick up its game in the future, reintegration is going to present
no major factor.
I have switched to KDE for this aspect and although some on this list
have stated they have problems with kmail, it's probably more because
they have specifically installed kmail and haven't installed kdepim
which includes all the address book and contact apps that integrate
nicely.

I am no KDE fanatic. their 'office suite', for example is shocking and
I use Libre Office for that along with gnumeric and abiword for side
projects.

But KDE definitely have their information management aspect together
better than anybody else out there, I have found, after considerable
research.

Gnome wouldn't be all that far behind and I have found that the
address book/calendering function with such projects as claws mail and
sylpheed more functional than evolution.

Perhaps a development direction of this nature would be more useful in
ironing out the bugs before going to the commercial market with a
stable, proven product and an established name might be best?

W.S.
