Juergen,
the presence of the SYNC messages is most often caused by
unexpected PS1 prompts I mentioned before, that is, it's not one of "$",
"#", "%", etc. The long pause is also symptomatic of the same.
Occasionally, it's caused by one of those other locally-coded prompts
that I gave examples of.
Finally, I've seen 'issue' and 'motd' cause problems as well -
particularly very long ones, or ones that contain control characters
(can't recall off the top of my head what the read buffer size for
expect is, though.)
