The following text reviews, in a historical context, the 1987, 1997 and
1998 stock market meltdowns.
The article was written nine years ago in November 1999, following the
adoption of the 1999 Financial Services Modernization Act.
It was subsequently published as a chapter in the Second Edition of The
Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order, Global Research, Montreal,
2003.
The financial sector reforms of the late 1999s had set the stage for the
current financial crisis.
