Participating by remote access from New York City, Peter Coy talked about
his cover story, "Is the Jobs Panic Justified?" For the story, Coy talked
with several economists about the recent rise in job losses and factors that
will determine job creation. On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that
initial applications for jobless benefits in the week ending Dec. 6 rose to
a seasonally adjusted 573,000 from an upwardly revised figure of 515,000 in
the previous week. Mr. Coy responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.
