Stephen Baker talked about his book, The Numerati (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt),
and responded to questions from audience members at the Free Library of
Philadelphia. The book is about a group of mathematicians and computer
scientists who analyze the millions of bits of information generated by our
daily activities to better understand what makes us tick. The goal, he says, is
to manipulate our behavior.

Stephen Baker has written for BusinessWeek for over twenty years. His work has
also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and the Boston
Globe. He won an Overseas Press Club Award for his portrait of the rising
Mexican auto industry.

Ghosts in the machine
The numerati are out there, mapping our behaviour through every keystroke and
web page visit. But who are they and what does their data say about us?
