MANY ADJECTIVES ARE used to describe Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527). Most
of them conjure associations with the devil, the father of lies. Maurizio
Viroli's new biography of "Old Nick," however, is an attempt to portray the
human side of this controversial figure, and thus to win him a sympathetic
hearing. While sometimes elegantly written, Viroli fails to convince us that
"Niccolo's smile" is anything but diabolic.
