Vivian Gembara talked about her book Drowning in the Desert: A JAG's Search for Justice in Iraq (Zenith Press; October, 17, 2008). The book is about her experiences serving as a JAG officer in Iraq from 2003 to 2004 defending and prosecuting soldiers during the early year of the war. Ms. Gembara, while still in her late 20s, initiated the first investigation into detainee abuse in Iraq and conducted the first trial of a U.S. soldier there. Following her talk she responded to students' questions. Vivian Gembara was awarded the Bronze Star for her service as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate General in Iraq. She is currently out of the military and lives in Colorado.
