Health care compromise in the works, sources say
"President Obama and top aides have quietly stepped up talks with moderate
Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine on a scaled-back health care bill,
according to two sources familiar with the negotiations. The compromise plan
would lack a government-run public health insurance option favored by Obama,
but would leave the door open to adding that provision down the road under
an idea proposed by Snowe, the sources said. full story

The Lousiana newspaper the Advocate recently reported that Gov. Bobby Jindal
(R-LA) has been using tax dollars to fund helicopter trips to and from
church. Now, a Lousianian pastor who heads a national interfaith group, the
Interfaith Alliance, says Jindal should reimburse taxpayers for the trips:

Signing statements that assert a unilateral presidential power to rewrite
laws. Indefinite detention without trial. A withdrawal from Iraq roughly in
line with that proposed by President Bush - which is to say, an indefinite
occupation army. A dramatic increase in spending on the war in Afghanistan
without any clear statement of our objective there. Lots of money for
bankers. At this rate, I won't be very surprised if the big push for
healthcare reform winds up as the Bush prescription drug benefit 2.0: top
dollar for healthcare corporations, happy talk for everyone else.

This Isn't Reform, It's Robbery

By Chris Hedges
Between 40 and 62 percent of the American people, including 80 percent of
registered Democrats, want universal, single-payer not-for-profit health
care for all Americans. The ability of the corporations to discredit and
silence voices that represent at least half of the population is another sad
testament to the power of our corporate state.

In the 19th century, Britain invaded China to force the Chinese government
to accept imported opium which was poisoning the Chinese population? (After
Britain won a glorious victory in the Opium Wars, thus forcing China to
enrich British merchants at the expense of the Chinese population's health,
the US and France demanded and got from China the same right to import the
poisonous stuff. Vast fortunes were built on this gangster trade.) You can

Dan Kennedy: "Greenwald wrote way back in February that the president had
"resoundingly and disgracefully"

failed his first civil liberties test by adopting the Bush administration's
"state secrets" privilege in dealing with detainees who'd been subjected to
extraordinary renditions.

More recently, Greenwald endorsed New York Times columnist Paul Krugman's
view that Obama had lost the trust of progressives

on issues such as terrorism, financial reform and, of course, healthcare.
