Why Is It So Hard To Hold Wall Street Accountable?

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission hearings continue to be a boring
mess, peppered with a few moments of significant insight. Throughout most of
yesterday's hearing featuring the nation's top bank regulator, Comptroller
of the Currency John Dugan, Commissioners treated their witness as a
credible expert, rather than a culpable catalyst of the crash. You'd never
know it from Dugan's calm, mousey demeanor before the FCIC, but he spent
several years working as a high-powered bank lobbyist before being appointed
to his current job by George W...

---- commentary:

The reason no one in the Commission ever pressed Dugan about his background
is because it is all an act and the players each know their lines to this
scripted farce.

All government "inquires" are meant to appease and delude the public into
thinking that the government really cares and that they want to "get to the
bottom of this". They all act as though they didn't know what was going on
in the office right next door to their office and that their subordinates
were acting independently of one another, so it really isn't there fault.

The most any inquiry is going to get out of the people in the "hot seat" is
a flaccid apology and a "promise" not to do it again - at least not the same
way.

There is a very tight knit club of "insiders" who operate on a "wink and a
not" basis to cover their collectives asses. There is no real
accountability. And, after the top executives of these failed institution
give their version of "mea culpa", they walk away with the millions of
dollars they bilked out of the unsuspecting public.

It's a good show but, nothing changes. There hasn't been one new rule
written by Congress to rein in these Wall Street rip off artists. Why?
Because, they are all in on the rip off and are bribed into keeping it that
way. So, dream on America, a depression is coming to a neighborhood near
you.
