I see that it doesn't support modems(or at least seem to), however it
appears to have a fuller DHCP implementation.

I guess this isn't exactly the best placed to ask about this... But has 
anyone tried Coyote Linux? It's almost exactly like ShareTheNet (floppy 
disk router), except it uses the 2.2.x kernel and there isn't a trial 
windows version... Also, on the compatibility list there is a greater 
list of network cards supported... If you use a linux machine you can 
download the free version, otherwise it's buy-before-you-try.
