Hi Robert,
That sounds an awful lot like our super-secret plans for the next major
release. I may have to kill you :)
Seriously, we're kicking around the idea of making a new HD based product
that is a superset of STN. The Linux world is so rich in great software,
but it's difficult to use. The great thing about STN is it's relatively
easy to set up and simple to use. I got the idea for STN after spending a
month or so tinkering around with my Linux box getting IP masq to work well.
After I was done, I realized I'd have a heck of a time reproducing it
because all of the config files were spread around the map.
The Linux distributions all take the kitchen sink approach -- everything
goes in. The problem is, when you install a Red Hat or Debian box, that's
only 1/8 the battle. Now you have to spend LOTS of time configuring the
darned thing, and unless you're a Linux hacker or have invested lots of
money in O'Rielly & Associates, you've got a lot of work to do. What the
world needs is not another Linux distribution, it's a (drumroll) Linux-based
server solution, and a Linux based client solution. Kind of like STN is a
Linux based Router solution (that happens to fit on a floppy). With STN,
you don't ever see a shell prompt -- if you do, I haven't done my job
completely. We'd like build the same kind of interface for a complete
server.
Hey, all it takes is time and money :)
Regs,
John
