I NEVER said that it would. Reread my previous message. ;-)

"SMC EN5030A" is an OEM labeling -- SMC is not a chipset manufacturer,
and SMC Networks ("SMC Networks": http://www.smc.com), does _NOT_
necessarily use SMSC ("Standard Microsystems": http://www.smsc.com -
note the difference) produced designs of ethernet controllers as the
basis for their network cards. However, some of their cards do use SMSC
designed controllers, and one such controller is the SMSC 83c170.

Regardless, now that you have provided the OEM labeling for the
controller used on your card, I think you'll find that the actual guts
of the controller is compatible with one of the following two generic
controller classes which is either the:

1. Tulip-type controller (DEC 21140 compatible controller)
2. RealTek 8139 compatible most likely with a modified EEPROM

I think you can now rule out the possibility that it is a relabeled SMSC
83c170 chipset being used on that card.

As I stated in my previous response, NONE of the "SMC" choices from the
STN GUI's picklist are going to work for that card, but if you time to
waste, feel free to try them.

IMHO, given the chipset labeling info you've now provided, ONLY the
"tulip.o" and "rtl8139.o" drivers are worth trying. If any of the
drivers provided with STN is going to work with that card, it is going
to be one of those two drivers.

According to Donald Becker (the author of nearly every ethernet driver
available for Linux), the SMC 1211 uses a RealTek 8139 compatible
controller. However, recent personal experience with Accton 1207D
Cheetah cards that come with ethernet controllers labeled MPX EN5038 has
shown me that you can't always be sure that underneath the "EN5038"
labeling is a RealTek 8139 compatible controller. (BTW, Accton and SMC
merged a while back and now operate out of the same headquarters, etc.)

But why take my word for it -- I've attached a message from Donald
Becker himself regarding the "EtherEZ 1211TX" which I easily located
using Dejanews.

(BTW, Steve, in case you're not aware of it the core of STN is a very
specialized distribution of Linux.)

SMC is no longer the same company that produced the SMC Ultra and EPIC.
The chip design part is called SMSC, and the SMC brand name is being put
on low-end OEM boards.

The 1211 board is a RealTek rtl8139 with a new label and a modified
EEPROM. It's supported by

   http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html

BTW, I've gotten reports that 8139 boards are $13 this week at Frys.
They aren't the best 10/100 boards, despite being a bus master board the
driver must copy almost every packet, but they are far better than a PCI
NE2000!
