Dear Sharity Users,
we have released an experimental beta version of Sharity 2.7 yesterday. The
main focus in this release is the implementation of a new protocol (NFS 3)
for the communication with the operating system kernel. It allows Sharity
2.7 to break the 2 GB file size limit. We have tested this new frontend for
several months on BSD, but not on other operating systems.
If you would like to support the development of Sharity, please download a
binary for this beta and install it. We do not recommend this beta for
production machines, though. Our primary interest is in platforms we do not
use in every day work:
- Solaris 2.7 and 8
- HP-UX 10.20 (there are some hacks for this version of HP-UX in the code
and we would like to know whether and how they work)
- HP-UX 11
- IRIX
- AIX (problems are likely on this platform...)
- DEC Unix (now Compaq True 64 Unix)
If you install this beta, please report your experiences (both: good AND
bad) to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since there may be a lot of feedback, we may
not be able to answer your report.
If you find problems, please verify whether they are related to the new NFS
3 frontend or not. You can switch back to the old NFS 2 module by editing
the file sharity.cfg (in /usr/local/sharity/etc on most Unix platforms).
Search for "nfs3" and change the "SortPrecedence" parameter for the nfs3
module from 2000 to 500, then restart Sharity.
This beta also fixes some of the known bugs in Sharity 2.6:
Mac OS X only:
- deadlocks when multiple automounts are triggered simultaneously
- crashes of the GUI application when started automatically as login item
All platforms:
- improved browsing compatibility
- fixed a special case bug where opening a file for append could create a
big "hole" in the file.

A new installation will delete all your settings (such as servers you have
configured, parameters you have changed and so on). If you want to save your
old settings, please save the file cfgdb.ppl (in the directory
/usr/local/sharity/var on most Unix platforms,
/Library/StartupItems/Sharity/var on Mac OS X) and restore it after the
upgrade. Stored passwords and the license code will be lost in any case,
there is no way to save them. You will have to re-enter this data after the
upgrade.

PS: If you want to compile from the source code: 2.7 beta 3 does not compile
cleanly on all platforms. Some minor syntactical fixes are required on some
operating systems.
