Can you ping your PCs using the IP address? If you can't telnet to them, they may not be running a telnet server. But you should be able to ping them.
Can you ping your sharity computer from the PCs? Are they listed in your /etc/hosts file? What systems are you using? What are your PCs running? Win98, Win2000? XP?
