Can you ping your PCs using the IP address?

If you can't telnet to them, they may not be running a telnet server.
But you should be able to ping them.

Can you ping your sharity computer from the PCs?

Are they listed in your /etc/hosts file?

What systems are you using?

What are your PCs running? Win98, Win2000? XP?
