The factory fix for this is as follows from the 3rd ed of the 2.2/2.5 FWD Speed Secrets book:

2.2L Carburetor Charcoal Particle Protection Filter (P4286797)

The charcoal canister is sealed. The carburetor vents fuel vapors into the canister to be purged back into the air cleaner/carburetor when the engine is running., See Figure 3-96. In rallying, the car takes a serious beating and can pound the canister so hard that the charcoal inside disintegrates into very small particles. Now these particles can be pulled into the carburetor when the engine is running. The charcoal particles in the carburetor tend to plug the jets and other metering orifices to the point that the engine will hardly run.

Insert these filters from/ /this package between the canister and the carburetor with the arrow on the filter pointing toward the carburetor as shown in the figure. It is recommended that the filters be changed after each "rough" rally.

The hoses used in this system are specially manufactured and if replacement becomes necessary it is important to use only fuel resistant hose.

Regular clear plastic filters seem to work OK as well.
Let me know if you want me to scan the figure for you.

Help! I'm still having trouble with my carb on my 83 1/2 carbed SC. Have spent tons getting it rebuilt and readjusted. Ran fairly decent over summer but now as cold weather hits, it wants to stick on fast idle all the time. I've tried all the usual fixes. I know these carbs were bad, even when new, and I don't have a ton of money to buy a lot of new stuff ... so any body have any help for this old guy who just loves my SC but gets weary of these carb problems!

Thanks! Larry Dentler

This may be a long shot, but when I had an 83 Charger about 150 years ago, I had a tendency to overfill the gas. This would get fuel in the charcal cannister. That would somehow (and I don't remember how) get charcal pieces in the carb and screw it up. I even got a new cannister way back then and had a mechanic at the dealership ask if I knew why the cannister went bad. I said, "Yeah, from overfilling the tank". (topping it off) He said "exactly"! In your rebuilds, did you ever notice any little chunks of charcal? Have you ever overfilled the tank? A long shot, but I thought I'd tell you about my experience. Good Luck.

Add a fuel filter on the line from the carb to the charcoal canister.

Honestly, the carbs aren't very well cast and tend to warp just in usual use.
The only real solution is to move to a better carb or fuel injection
(megasquirt FTW!)

Good luck, Stefan
