What part couldn't you get off? The snap ring? There is a tool for compressing the locking mechanism to get the snap ring off, Sears carries it. Or you can make one, I made one out of a spare tire hold down, I just shortened it and opened the hole up some, then put it over the large bolt and compressed with the steering wheel nut.
