Let us reflect deeply on the following sayings Murtaza Ali (a.s.) which have been extracted from a book entitled 'Peak of Eloquence NAHJUL BALAGHA'—Sermons, Letters and Sayings of Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib, published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Sixth U.S. Edition 1996. In today's posting, let us examine the following gems of wisdom on the topic of knowledge. 1. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "Every container gets narrower according to what is placed in it except knowledge which expands instead." Quotation number 205, page 612. 2. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever takes account of his self is benefited, and whoever remains neglectful of it suffers. Whoever fears remains safe; whoever takes instruction (from things around) gets light; and whoever gets light gets understanding, and whoever gets understanding secures knowledge." Quotation number 208, page 613. 3. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "Knowledge dispels the excuse of those who advance excuses." Quotation number 294, page 640. 4. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "When Allah intends to humiliate a person He denies him knowledge." Quotation number 298, page 640. 5. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "Be afraid of the ideas of believers, because Allah, the Sublime, has put truth on their tongues." Quotation number 319, page 644. 6. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "Knowledge is of two kinds — that which is absorbed and that which is just heard. The one that is heard does not give benefit unless it is absorbed." Quotation number 348, page 651. 7. Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: "There are some creatures of Allah whom Allah particularizes with favours for the benefit of people, therefore He keeps these in their hands so long as they give them to others; but when they deny them to others He takes away the favours from them and send them to others." Quotation number 434, page 666. Key Ahadith: 1. Knowledge of religion: It is said in a Hadith: "He whom God wills a good (thing), He grants him the understanding of religion." (Tirmidhi, V, 28) (Tawil 604, A Thousand Wisdoms, page 321) 2. Seeker of Knowledge: It is said in a Hadith: "Gods clears a path to paradise for the one who follows a path seeking knowledge. And the angels lay down their wings for the pleasure of the seeker of knowledge. As for the learned (âlim), whoever is in the heavens and the earth, including fish in the water seek forgiveness for him, and the excellence of the learned one over the worshipper (âbid) is like that of the moon over all the stars".
