Salamun Alykum….
Have we already realized how fortunate and blessed we all are to get another one-of-its kind month of Ramazan, yet again, in our lives? Indeed, the season of blessings, benefits and bounties is, once again, knocking at the doors of our bodies and the souls. However, we must also not forget that while the fasts of Ramazan can remarkably improve a person’s physical (in addition to the spiritual) health, if the correct approach, habits and diet are not followed, we can possibly worsen it! On the other hand, Ramazan could be one of the best opportunities to get rid out of the issues such as anxiety (commonly known as stress or tension), depression, obesity (over weight) and yes, smoking! The following three simple hints & tips health tips are based on credible scientific evidences, published studies and research and, if practiced regularly and properly, can help us all prevent major health issues that may aggravate or arise due to the “mismanagement of Ramazan”. *Tip 1: Eat well (but not full)* Indeed yes; there is a big difference between “quality” and “quantity”. As we read in Quran Majeed, Chapter 20 verse 89 of the *“Eat of the “good and wholesome” things that We have provided for your sustenance, but indulge in no “excess” therein”.* I can’t stress it enough; overeating can not only harm the body but it is thought also to interfere with a person’s spiritual growth during the month. Definitely, a diet that has less than a normal amount of food but is sufficiently balanced will keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan. Try to eat a simple Iftaar. Not possible? I know it’s not possible for many of us to start the Iftaar with a “half plate”. I’ve a suggestion for the same. If you have to, fill your plate with as much fruits you can instead of “*Pakoras, Spicy Choolas, Samosas and anything “deep fried”*. *For example, an apple, a banana or two, dates, water melon, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango or any fruit or vegetable *will not only make you feel better but will also help you prevent from acidity (heart burn) after Iftaar. Do eat “Chholas” (chick peas) but preferably without “Chaat Masalah or too many spices". *Tip 2: Sleep well* Due to the mismanagement of “Sehri” schedule, many of us become deprived of the sufficient sleep in Ramazan. This not only negatively affects our weight but also takes part in the deterioration of our brain’s productivity. Try your best to sleep for 7 hours or at least for 6 hours during every 24 hours. This does not mean that you have to sleep for 7 hours in one go. You could divide your sleep / nap time in 24 hours in any 1-2 shifts. For example, if you slept only for 4 hours during the night. You could sleep in the afternoon or even when you return from the work. But don't go to bed right after eating dinner or Iftaar. Wait for at least 2-3 hours. This will help prevent acidity problem. *Tip 3: Be active* Did you know that exercising doesn’t always mean that you have to swim or jog or walk continuously every day for 30 minutes? While these could be one of the best sources of exercise, one often finds these difficult to practice during Ramazan. How about taking a 15 to 20 minute brisk walk just before Iftaari? Or how about parking your car far away from the central door of the shopping mall and walking all the way to the door? How about checking all the sections of the huge shopping mall (just for window shopping, of course)? How about avoiding an elevator if you could use the stairs for 3-4 floors? Believe it or not, even if done randomly during the day but regularly, these small activities can greatly make up for the lack of regular exercise on daily basis. Don't walk or exercise right after dinner or Iftaar. Wait for at least 3 hours. Remember, it is never good to get engaged in a physical activity when your stomach is full. Why? Simply because when your stomach gets the food you eat, most of the blood from your heart goes to your stomach to facilitate digestion of this food. As a result, if you put extra stress on your heart (by exercising), chances are that your heart will not get all the blood that it needs. Result? You know, already. That’s why cardiologists unanimously advise heart patients to refrain from engaging in any physical activity immediately after eating. *What’s next?* In the next email, Insha’Allah, we will discover the top 5 “risks” or health disorders that may arise or become worse due to the poor practicing of Ramazan and how to prevent those. Last but not least, remember to maximize on your gains from fasting and minimize health problems while enjoying this great gift of Allah! *Disclaimer:* The above health-related tips and content are for informational purposes only, are general in nature and do not replace personal medical advice. If you have diabetes, kidney disease, ulcer or any other disease or disorder, be sure to discuss it with your doctor especially with respect to the fasting. Similarly, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should first discuss the prospects of fasting with your physician and act accordingly. They obey their leader in the false path whereas you disobey your leader in the path of Truth. They behave towards their leader honestly whereas you are treacherous towards your leader."
