Yesterday I got some errors when demoing because the machine where the server ran had bad connectivity. After a number of resets and a tunnel to poke a hole to a bad transparent proxy probably eating the .xml files, all went well. When things were failing, the error was misleading (java here). Something like bad xml. I'm not sure if it is easy, but having 0-length retrieved resources marked with a different error might work.
