In that case it sounds like your 630 vs 420 number involves the server skipping some steps. If you include the extra requests necessary to fetch the javascript (putting more load on the server), I think you might find that the overall result is slower. Or maybe not. As you pointed out in your original note, browser and ISP caches have a role to play
