If you simply look at other platforms with similar capabilities (i.e. normal web pages, or the facebook platform), most apps are a mixture of markup and javascript. While I'm sure there are some people who only know "some HTML", that's a very small percentage of the people who are going to write OpenSocial apps. The current OSML draft proposal is very complicated and will take time to learn -- I find it highly unlikely that the people using it will be doing so because they're not "javascript types". Nobody is saying that it *has to* match the REST URL syntax.
