Gems which are pure ruby should be working fine, at least they were  
last time I checked. It's the compiled gems which are problematic, but  
unfortunately as the ruby installed on your system is almost certainly  
slightly different from the one in shoes, the compiled extensions for  
your systems ruby are often incompatible with shoes's ruby and just  
segfault or something.
