re simple-menu

I am now on the latest build and working through the samples found that 
simple-menu doesn't work on my machine

(Windows xp sp3)
I went back through the versions and I can't get it to work on any

All I get is a blank window.

I am struggling to follow the code as it is inheriting from Widget

Anybody know what is wrong?
