I'm not sure how beneficial another Ubuntu based distribution would be--in my mind Sarah's suggestion that edubuntu get the shoes treatment would be a better idea. Unless your goal is to create a very small and lightweight distribution around Shoes, which is a niche no distro has yet addressed. However I urge you to bear in mind how many distros there already are and weigh that against the benefits of starting a new one. E17 is flat out Awesome! I haven't fallen in love with a desktop, ever. (OS X is nice but makes me sad). But for e17 I've fallen hard. Here are some distros that are e17 centric that you might want to look into : http://www.byzantineroads.info/2008/06/5-enlightened-linux-distros/ OzOS is based on Ubuntu and run by a core e17 contributer, for instance. Regards. P.S. And apologies to _why if this OT thread is annoying. It's been too fun talking about Linux. Esp. WRT Ruby, since the balance seems so heavily skewed towards OS X.
