thanks for getting in touch and welcome to Shogun! Your background is totally 
suited to the projects you mention, so make sure to apply.

Rather than implementing a new algorithm, start with a small patch and send a 
pull request. you can then move to something that is closer to your planned 
project.
All this is described on our "getting involved" guide and the ideas page - but 
do get back to me if these pages are unclear.

Please note that the fundamental ML Algorithms project is likely to receive a 
lot of applications. Also have a look on the other projects we offer and 
consider having a fallback.
