*PyData Warsaw 2017* is going on 18-20 October in Warsaw, Poland.
Interested in learning Julia? Join us on Thursday for *Bogumił Kamiński's
talk on getting started with Julia *for numerical computing*!*

Julia will also be featured at *PyData NYC*, on 27 November. Shashi Gowda
of Julia Computing will be presenting on *JuliaDB*, a system for
high-performance database operations in Julia.

Keep your eyes peeled for Julia talks at a PyData event near you!

*Did you miss JuliaCon 2017?* You can watch videos of the talks and

The Astropy Project has had an exciting and active month!

We had a *Coordination Meeting* at the Simon’s Foundation Flatiron
Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics in New York, NY. During
this meeting, we hashed out *changes to the way we handle our affiliate
packages* including establishing a new category, “Astropy Coordinated
Packages”.

We also made big pushes on the next Astropy paper and our next big
functionality: *spectroscopy*! There were two days in NYC dedicated to
documentation and tutorials where we formulated a new vision for *how to
increase the discoverability of examples* and developed a framework for
keeping track of all the educational materials
<https://numfocus.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c4bde6125a526b0fe180fdc3d&id=cfba6b36c5&e=800206b069>
.

We also held our first ever dedicated *Tutorial Sprint*! This was hosted
by the Department of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin - Madison
<https://numfocus.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c4bde6125a526b0fe180fdc3d&id=c2101378d4&e=800206b069>
and we had a great group of (mostly) graduate students participate. This
was an extremely successful event and we ended up with *SEVEN new tutorials
*and about* 10 folks trained in the code contribution workflow*.

Finally, we launched a *Slack Team*! Please join if you’re interested in
chatting about the project or any of these initiatives:

We have launched a new initiative called *Carpentry for Latin America*,
which is a three-way partnership
<https://numfocus.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c4bde6125a526b0fe180fdc3d&id=3f7ba30b26&e=800206b069>
between the Carpentries, the National Node of Bioinformatics Mexico (NNB)
and the Ibero-American Society of Bioinformatics (SoIBio) to help spread
Carpentry workshops through the region.

We are just starting round two of *Carpentries mentoring*, a targeted,
8-week program to help new instructors find their feet. Details and signup
here

for both mentors and mentees.

We have just issued an open call

for *new Trainers* so that we can continue to grow our instructor
community. We currently have around 40 Trainers (the people who train new
instructors). We are hoping to boost those numbers so we can continue to
push into new areas such as Latin America, Africa and beyond.
