;-) Yes indeedy, I sure was a kid long before Taylor's metals came along. What I said was what I said though.
There were in fact metal head drivers, most painted orange, at one of the ranges I frequented. But all 3 driving ranges in the town I was raised in had metal head loaner drivers available at no additional charge. The "Pittsburgh Persimmon" clubs became popular via a brilliant marketing scheme. The metals I referred to were probably aluminum or some alloy. I don't know. I do know however that they weighed a hell of a lot more than most anyone could or would use properly. They were painted orange because, strangely believe it, people would steal them from the range and actually try to use them on the golf course. It is to wonder.
