had a bit of a problem with Tom W's address, he sent this along earlier: John:
What a load of desperation this is - but then in the fertile minds of golfers looking for that "edge", I guess we can expect almost anything!!!! Absolutely impossible to tell what you end up with unless you have an ultrasonic thickness testing meter. And without question unless you put the head on a milling machine where you have programmed the machine with the PRECISE bulge and roll (which is RARELY as consistent as a milling machine programmer would ever like it to be to ensure taking exactly the same amount off the entire face) then you are simply guessing. I suspect clubmakers could have a LOT of fun with desperate and gullible golfers with this one - adding on a service in your shops of COR ENHANCEMENT. Can't you see it? The guy walks in - you talk the talk with him - you disappear back in your shop leaving him up front - you switch on some sander so he hears something loud - you take hand sandpaper and sand across the face a few times so that the face now looks to have a little different satin type texture - you bring it out and tell him you got it up at least 5-6 COR points - he walks to the range and SIMPLY because of the power of suggestion, he thinks he hits it 10-20 yards farther!!!! HA! Seriously, this is not possible to do with any level of consistency - no way no how - and if you really did go after the face vigorously you would be running a risk of doing some damage or even taking some areas down much more than others that you could cause the face to cave in, depending on how close the head maker got the face thickness to its yield strength limit. So chalk this one up to yet another great myth=20 TOM W -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]=20 Sent: Monday, January 27, 2003 4:41 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: ShopTalk: Face Milling A fella sent me this note this weekend, anyone know how to do this? john DO YOU KNOW THE TECHNIQUE ON HOW THE TOUR VAN GUYS ARE MILLING, (SANDING, THINNING) DOWN THE FACES OF DRIVERS. cAN YOU TELL ME WHAT PIECE OF MACHINERY ARE THEY USING? ANY INFO ON THIS TOPIC WOULD BE GREAT. I HAVE DONE A COUPLE AND HAD GOOD SUCCESS, BUT I HAVE NO WAY TO MEASURE HOW MUCH I TOOK OFF! Thanks!
