I have agreed with that statement since 1970.

Used to have a 1971 Subaru FF1 station wagon....great little "truck" with
front wheel drive, flat 4 cylinder, air conditioning, jack and spare tire
all under the short hood over the engine. Got 35 mpg around town and had a
huge cargo space in the back. Great for a pile of golf bags. Once bought the
boys an air-hockey table and put it in the back all set up. Hauled washing
machines and dryers, two at a time, in it as well. Rear seat folded up
against the front seat, rear axle was under the body (absolutely flat floor
and low) and rear door was split, so top could be down with tailgate
extended. Great for long boards. Drove it off-road and on-road...great
traction and light weight... so light that a couple of men could push it out
if it did get stuck. Only down side was the poor quality of materials at
that time...Japanese plastics and vinyls were bad, bad, bad. Engine blew a
head gasket at 140, 000 miles in 1978 and cost to fix it was above the value
of the car. Bought a custom C model VW Rabbit to replace it...fun car with
OK gas mileage (28 mpg), but not as good as the Subaru, nor as much space.
