Should I give him the lowdown on these clubs or just do the regrip and be done with it?
Before giving him the lowdown, I suggest that you find out how much golf his wife plays. Maybe she only plays a few rounds a year and spends the rest of her time on the patio with her friends at the "club". For this type of use a $35-40 regrip job is all she needs.
I had a customer in last week for a regrip on a 15 year old set that he was going to leave at his condo in Hawaii. Did the regrips while he waited. Next day he brought in his wife's set for regripping. They were zinc head, discount store junkers. Regripped them after he said she plays about once every three weeks. He was so happy that the third day he brought in his "home" set for regripping and loft/lie adjusting. Since last week three of his golf buddies brought in their clubs for regripping and loft/lie adjustments. That's what makes your business grow.
Don't be too fast to "bad mouth" the equipment your customer "paid good money" for. We have all made buying mistakes in our lives! I never owned a Yugo! But it sure was an attractive thought when my kids bought their first cars.
