Hi Dave, That's not much difference. Since you are doing a comparison to look at differences I would exaggerate the difference to make it more discernible and then back off for actual clubs if you decide you like it. I would use a light weight shaft to get the length difference up to about 1-inch with the same swingweight. Test the extremes, then if you find a difference from the steel shaft back off to where you can't and see where you are. A Rifle Graphite gave me approximately an inch in a 4-iron. Good luck.

Five iron. Relatively forgiving head.

Rapport Low Torque shaft, at Cub's recommendation. (I don't think I'd use it in a set; it's tip-trim only.) Medium-weight shaft. Club a little long (about 3/8" longer than my steel-shafted clubs), to keep the swingweight the same as my clubs. Shaft somewhat stiffer than mine -- because it's tip-trim only so I couldn't get a flex softer and fix it.

This is mostly to see if the extra length hurts. If I can't hit it as consistently as my current 5i, then I'll try it at the same length but lower swingweight. If that fails too, I'll continue to use steel for my irons until somebody comes out with a graphite shaft that is light weight but sufficiently tip-heavy that it swingweights like steel.

Cheers!

Tell us a little about your experiment??? it sounds like obviously an iron
with a graphite shaft.... are you going with a very light weight shaft? or
something in the 80+ gram range??? are you playing with swingwts or lengths
different than your steel shafted irons???
