You can also buy the batteries with tabs, which makes the soldering job easier. If you can get the old ones out you will usually find that only one or two cells in the pack have died and the others are OK.
Investing in a good charger, rather than the cheap one that is included with your drill is also a good idea. The skilled tradesmen that I know use DeWalt tools. Although Bob Vila and Al T. use Makita, so they must be pretty good too.
