Exactly correct. As it happens, I own(ed) several HF tools. Thus, I'm a person who "owned one."  For the most part, they are crap. Sure, some of their stuff is o.k. for the occasional dabbler, but for the long haul, they are crap. Example; ratchet wrenches broke within a couple months use. HF replaced them but they shouldn't have broken, and the replacements failed almost immediatly. Example; sliding compound miter saw. Came without support arms. HF replaced the complete saw. Replacement came without saw blade. HF replaced the unit. Replacement broke with the second use. The compound arm, made of plastic and aluminum failed. Example; micro torch failed with second use. Replacement didn't work at all. Another replacement could not be turned off . . . faulty valve. Example; pancake compressor failed within a month. Replacement failed within two months. I could go on. Example; drill bit set from HF was absolute crap. Soft metals failed after only a few uses.

Comparison; Sears Craftsman ratchet wrench failed after five years. Replacement still going strong(lifetime warranty.) Example; Sears Craftsman miter saw still going strong after over thirty years. The HF saw was owned by my son. I told him to buy quality. He went for price. I could go on.

As I said; you're correct in saying that you should investigate what you buy. Ask the person who owns one. Well my friend, I have owned a hell of a lot more than "one" HF tool. I stand by my statement. HF stuff is crap. You may get some things that hold up but in the main, it's crap.

Buy the best tools you can afford.

Some times it helps to ask a person who owns one!
