If he's really a beginner, I think that the 3I will be much too hard for him to have any chance of hitting solid, I've been playing for two years now and with an index of about 16 still don't carry it. I think the 5/7/9/W along with a large headed 5W for tee shots and a normal headed 7W for fairway shots might be more appropriate. -Dave
