And....for attaching....3-M makes a plastic clip that is used for attaching wires to the wall (like organizing your wiring on the back of your computer desk...uggggh).  It uses their "pull to detach" adhesive.  If you buy a pack of these, then stick two of 'em together back to back, you will have a gadget that can clip on to the shaft, and then you clip the laser pen into the other side.
 
You can get the clips at most office supply stores....

    I believe you mention using a laser pen when finding FLO on a frequency meter?  Where can one get these laser pens?  Is there a specific brand name?
