That's an over-the-hosel shaft. Dont heat the head, just the the bottom of the shaft. You could wrap the head with a wet cloth if you're really concerned about melting the face. Best way to heat the hosel is with a pin-point heat source rather than a heat gun, which spreads the heat to widely.
 
I have a cone attachment for my propane torch that allows the flame to be applied over a small area. You could do the same with a butane torch - like a cigar lighter, for instance.
