I picked up this tidbit following some web references that David Dugally sent me. This one was particularly interesting:
http://www.memagazine.org/backissues/july03/departments/input_output/input_out.html

It's an article in Mechanical Engineering magazine on a golf club researcher (Tom Mase of Michigan State Univ, but he used to work for Callaway and Titleist) using CAD/CAE programs. The article is very readable, and not at all technical; check it out if you're interested. The most interesting tidbit there was...

Mase let the program maximize the COR for a 200g clubhead. It came out at 0.917, which is a lot higher than the rules allow.

Cheers!
