I'm not that familiar with the area, but played there a couple of times. I believe one of the best deals around is the Karsten course at Arizona State. (named after Mr. Solheim, founder of PING). It's by one of the more famous architects... the "pot hole" guy.. is that Fazio or Pete Dye, I never remember. ?
There are so many wonderful courses (many of them desert, "target-style" of course), that I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. I've heard one called Wig-Wam (one of the older resorts) is good. And then there's Scottsdale... whew. If you don't mind at least one round at a pricier place, you might enjoy The Boulders, in Carefree, about 25 miles (as I recall) North of Scottsdale. I understand it's considered one of the very best resort courses.
Have fun!
