Reed - are you saying vertical is best or merely that you need weight?

Fellows I lurk on this forum to learn from you pros. I do use a laser set up that I attach to the end of the shaft. I twang both horizontal and vertical to see if there is a change. I will dig out where I purchased them and I will make photos how I atttach them to shafts. i use a white wall card board 5 feet away with a straight line horizontal and vertical. I personally believe that if you do not hang weight and do it horizontal, the reading is false(my belief only). I've been a engineer tooooo long. I use the same type laser to line up grips. works good on putters also. I set mine up in a bridgeport mill with a air clamping device(has a regulator so I can repeat clamping force) that I built. At the same time, I check the cpm while still clamped up. I have the fixture set up so that i can slide shaft any distance out the back so that i can check frequency before I cut off. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse. thanks reed

No problem.
What I recall of it was he had a laser pen (?) that he attached on the end of the shaft (can't remember how) and he clamped the shaft in what I think was the clamping device he used for the frequency meter (he has one of John Kaufman's machines). He would put the shaft in parallel to the workbench (if that isn't obvious!) and twang it parallel with the workbench as well with the laser pointing at the wall so you would see the visual pattern quite easily. Some oscillated a fair bit and the "good" ones eventually oscillated at a relatively flat line. He would rotate the shaft until he found the "best" FLO pattern. (I may not be using the best terminology here).
It was quite simple looking. What I am hoping to get more information on is how he attached the laser pointer and where he got it etc. The clamping would also be a question as I do not have a freq. meter and I think I would be "stuck" clamping in a vice.
If I get more info, I will pass it on.

BTW - this is Patrick Inglis that I am speaking of... used to be on ShopTalk but I don't think he is anymore.
