I remember Falcon golf...the guy that started it had a great business going locally and was one of the first to really push the custom fit clubs idea. I guess he thought since he was doing so well in suburban Detroit, maybe he could take his product national. He did some kind of goofy iron design, spent a fortune on it and promptly went bankrupt. Kind of lost his focus.
My buddy (the guy that is retiring and moving to Tellico in Tennessee) did all of his cabinet work at Falcon in exchange for a set of irons and woods (that I have since reshafted several times).

It was beacuse of just that that I got into cubmaking. I went to a yoyo that built me a driver, some of you just might of heard of him, he owned Falcon Golf, But the one thing that I came away from him with the knowledge about the club faces being 2* open and why. I really think that if I would of just went into his shop and ordered a drive, that i would of never got interested in golf, if I closd the face down I could hit the livng hell out of my 3 wood. But it was because he told me just that much, by the way he built me a driver with a sq face, he got me interested in the game and I''ll tell you guys/gals something he might of charged me over $100.00 for the driver but I came away with so much knowledge that I just could not wait until I got home so that I could of looked up some wood working equipment.

Closed clubface questionJack,
I would guess that it all depends on where you are making impact on the club face. If you're hitting the ball right in the middle of the face, then 2 closed would seemingly give you a straight ball flight 2 left of target. That's not hard to fix at all. But, if you are hitting the ball toward the heel, a square or open face would just accentuate the slice. If you are hitting the ball towards the toe, you could put a little draw on the ball, or hit a straight shot with a square face. Frankly, I'd want 2 closed and work on hitting the ball in the middle of the face. I've been about 4 outside-in almost all my life and find 2 closed on a 48" driver works out very well. I simply learned to close my stance about 4 and have hit the ball straight for the last 50 years...well, usually. :-)
Gear effect, on a wood club with a center of gravity rearward of the face, is caused by hitting the ball offcenter. A hit toward the heel causes the head to rotate counterclickwise (right hand player) around the head's center of gravity and put a gear effect slicing spin on the ball. The bulge on the face directs the ball further to the left, so it will slice back to the target line. A hit toward the toe causes the head to rotate clockwise around the head's cg and puts a hooking gear effect spin on the ball. Again, the bulge directs the ball further to the right so it will hook to the target line.

This was sent to me by a guy that visited my web site, wonder if anyone can help him with this?? John
Thanks so much for replying to a previous query. If you don't mind, I have another question for you.
I recently had my swing tested. My driver swing speed is 105, 2 degrees out-to-in, avg swing temp 1.3 sec. According the clubmaker, because of my out-to-in swingpath, the more closed the clubface angle is, the more it will accentuate my slice/fade tendencies, and he insisted I should have a square face angle, or even slightly open. This seems counter-intuitive (I would have assumed a closed clubface would result in a draw). He tried to explain it to me--it had to do with the gear effect caused by the manufactured horizontal bulge in the clubhead. I'm having a heck of time trying to comprehend it--it's beyond me.
I don't expect you to try to explain it to me in any detail. But I am looking simply to find confirmation, or refutation, of his claim that a closed clubface alignment, paired with my out-to-in swing path tendency, would actually accentuate my slice/fade tendencies. If correct, since most driver heads are closed to some degree, I wonder how much of a closed face angle could still be acceptable?
Really appreciate it.
