I'll try once I've got the machine well set up. (Now that I know how to UN-do it if it gets in trouble again, I won't be afraid.) But I have to ask, what did you do with Microsoft's own firewall? Through the control panel I can get to [Windows Firewall > General] where there's an on-off checkbox. But I used that to check it OFF. When the machine came back after reboot followed by safe mode, it was back on. I have a feeling that both XPFW and ZA on is a very bad thing, and you just concurred.
