A customer friend of mine from Ireland is planning a trip this June
and was looking for some advice on pre-1980's persimmon and blades.
Since I was barely out of diapers in the 1970's (even though I
turned 50 this year) I suggested that he join shoptalk and get
advice from some of the old timers that might have experience with this stuff.
I have a couple of sets in the basement of that vintage. Since I'm
not a collector of antique clubs, I'm certainly willing to part with
them. I was thinking of selling them on eBay or to Ironfinder Golf,
but if your buddy wants one of the sets for his Ireland trip...
Anyway, they are:
MacGregor MT Tourney irons from 1967. 2-iron to 9-iron. Note: the
7-iron is the slightly different MT2 model. I've measured them -- you
know me -- and it fits right in with the rest of the set on all the
usual specs. (Actually, I didn't measure loft nor lie. But these are
forged clubs, so any problems there can be easily fixed.) The head
and face shape are also just about the same. The grips are in
cosmetically good shape, but I'd replace them if I were going to play
with them. Pretty good frequency match, considering their vintage.
(No club was more than 2cpm off a best-fit straight line, and the
slope was 4.4cpm/club.)
PowerBilt Citation Levelume irons from 1966-69. Not nearly as smooth
a frequency match as the MacGregors. The grips definitely need replacement.
Both sets' heads are in remarkably good condition cosmetically, but
they obviously have been played a lot. And both sets are swingweight
matched within +- one point.
BTW, if you're not interested in these, I certainly agree with
whoever said the Haigs are a pleasure to play.
Cheers!
