Hah;

Well, you /could /make a 37", 363 cpm 7 iron, with max tipping of an original Rifle 6.5 flex shaft, ultra light head (bore out some material from the hosel), and clamp the mess a full 5", but why? If you have a guy who likes to hit low right short shots it may work out. Otherwise super stiff flexes make no sense to me. I had this argument with Lloyd over and over, as well as with a few devotees of the FitChip system. Dave Dugally could probably provide more info about the FC, but as I recall, a golfer hits about a dozen or so shots with the FC attached to the shaft. The data is uploaded to FC software and a model results, recommending shaft flexes. In every case, regardless of empirical data, flex recommendations are significantly higher than would be the case via the usual fitting methodology.

Like just about every clubmaker I've known, I've tried significantly firmer shafts than I normally use and my results have been abysmally poor. Low right, low right, low right. I've also had several customers try out several demo models I kept on hand - shafts from the so-called "L" flex to the highest flex I could make. All the same heads and all the same brand shafts and grips. In every single case, the firmer the shaft the poorer the result. I simply do not understand how a 363 cpm shafted 7 iron can improve distance or direction for a guy swinging the club at say, 75 mph with a lousy "smash factor". It doesn't make any sense at all. But then, as Doctor Tutelman will tell you, I'm an old-time empiricist. I like to put theory into practice and observe the results. In my experience, stiffer is only better in some certain uh, well, I'll leave that alone ;-)

TFlan I will have to be more careful moving forward.

The stiffest 7-Iron (grip off) I've made is 341 cpm, 8.0 Flex = XX+ Flex

About 2 full flexes too soft if 363 cpm is the target build.

I do not think a 363 cpm 7-Iron can be built.

Thanks, Harry

Harry;

You're arguing with a guy who knows everything-pointless.

Better be careful or we'll get Lloyd back here ;-(
