Here is the easy way for perfect results. You need a 40 X 1 inch belt sander - a 30 inch does not allow clearance on driver heads. I always used a dry linen belt and a homemade rack that held the shaft in a large wire loop and a "V" block (lined with a piece of leather just above the ferrule. The trick is to rotate the head by twirling it with the index finger of your right hand while using the left hand to GENTLY push the shaft toward the moving belt. MOST IMPRTANT IS TO ROTATE IN THE PROPER DIRECTION. THE BELT MOVES DOWN AND THE FERRULE ROTATES UP. Turn in the wrond direction and the job is destroyed! Pull the ferrule away from the moving belt turn off the sander. Save the "lace" that comes off the ferrule (more on this later). Now take a paper towel patch soaked on acetone and wipe ferrule from shaft to head ONLY ONCE DON'T RUB. The ferrule will have a perfect shine and blend to the top of the hosel. This method takes about 10 seconds start to finish.
NO NEED TO MATCH FERRULE DIAMETER SIZES TO HOSEL OUTER DIAMETER!!!!! Now to the saved lace. A pinch of this dissolved with acetone in a glass or stainless steel cup stirred with a wood coffee stirrer to the consistency of sour cream. This paste will act as a filler for ferrules that don't perfectly match a hosel or to repair a cracked ferrule. Smear a glob on with stirrer stick and allow about 2 minutes to dry and wipe with paper towel patch soaked in acetone as described above to smooth. -----Original Message----- From: clubsbymoe <[email protected]> To: ShopTalk@mail. msen. com <ShopX 1 [email protected]> Sent: Sat, Oct 29, 2016 3:32 pm Subject: Re: ShopTalk: Ferrule Finishing Bob, Acetone on a cotton cloth will shape and shine. Soak the cloth and rub like you were shining a shoe. If the ferrule gets a little dull with the "shine", acetone on the cloth gently wiping will bring the shine up. No such luck I guess. Still easier to just match sizes though. Significantly less "artwork" involved. Sent from my iPhone On Oct 29, 2016, at 3:39 PM, Ed Reeder <[email protected]> wrote:
