You might take a look at Shorewall's Accounting facility
(http://www.shorewall.net/Accounting.html.

It would be a good idea to upgrade, given that 2.4 is no longer supported.
Be sure to read the release notes carefully before upgrading as there are
some issues when going from 2.x to 3.x.
