I guess that one thing you could try would be to: cd /tmp cp /usr/share/shorewall/modules . perl -i -p -e 's/loadmodule/modprobe --verbose/' modules . modules You'll get a bunch of messages like this: FATAL: Module xt_hashlimit not found. but it might also show us where things go south.
